I think something happened when I saw that rat. I must have panicked so hard that my brain somehow slipped into another dimension. Or a dream world. Or maybe instead of jumping, I actually fell and hit my head and now I’m in a coma imagining this whole thing. Because there’s just no way that Brent Castro just said the words: “Do you want to go out with me?”

To me.

There is just no way.

I chomp down on the inside of my lip. Yep. It hurts.

On the off chance that this is reality and not some crazy coma dream world, I should probably say something instead of just standing here.

“What?”

Good one, brain. Way to say something intelligent.

Brent’s hands clasp together and then he pulls them apart and takes a little step backward. “I asked if you wanted to go out sometime. Maybe for coffee?”

“Coffee,” I say. Wow, my brain is just on fire today. So smart. Much intelligence.

Brent scratches the back of his head. “Well, uh, or a smoothie or something. Or nothing. It’s not a big deal. I just meant we could go out as…friends. Coffee on me to make up for this horrible rat incident.”

Everything he says is so scrambled together and halfway coherent. He’s nervous. He’s mumbling. Why?

Maybe it’s just about his job. Maybe this rat thing was so scary and he’s worried I’ll leave them a bad online review or something.

Yeah, that’s probably it.

But I can’t focus right now. Because, yeah the rat scared me, but that’s not why my heart is pounding.

I was in Brent’s arms.

Like, in his arms.

My overweight disgusting body was cradled in his arms. And he didn’t even look like he was struggling to breathe from the effort, or like he was disgusted to be holding someone so heavy and gross. He looked… like it was no big deal.

And that is a very big deal. I can’t stop thinking about it.

Maybe thirty seconds have passed, but here I am, practically hyperventilating because a guy picked me up. I didn’t even mean to jump into his arms like that, I was just so freaked out by a rat.

And now that I’m picturing his arms and how it felt to be held like that, all closely guarded and kept safe, it’s all I can think about.

“I’m sorry,” Brent says. “I shouldn’t have put you on the spot like that. Forget I asked. We have a few minutes left. Want to do some tire flips now that the rat is gone? And by the way, I promise to have this whole area cleared. We’ll find a better way to store this stuff so that doesn’t happen again.”

He’s rambling again. Now we’re both feeling weird. He asked me a question and I just ignored it. But that’s because I don’t know his intentions.

Oh, who am I kidding? Brent didn’t ask me out in a romantic way. He probably did it to save face and make sure I’m not mad at him for the rat incident.

But, maybe I do want to have coffee with him.
